A cancer diagnosis changes life in so many ways. Maddy Zamel's battle with breast cancer inspired her to live intentionally. And as a result, she is changing lives all around her.
In 2021, Maddy moved from New York to Hunterdon County looking for a fresh start. She was still settling into her new life when she got her diagnosis. But the unexpected challenge didn't set her back. Still going through chemotherapy, she decided to plant her roots firmly in her new community and pursue her dream of opening a women's clothing boutique.
In March 2023, she opened the doors to Lady of Leitrim in the town of Clinton. Naming it in honor of her late mother, who grew up in Leitrim, Ireland, Maddy envisioned her boutique as more than a clothing store. She designed it to be a sanctuary for women to gather, support one another, and inspire each other to be their best selves.
"This community has made me feel so welcome and supported throughout my own cancer journey," Maddy explained. "When I opened my business, I wanted it to be a platform to give back and be more involved in the community."
In keeping with her mission, Maddy drew on her own health journey and her love for fashion to organize a chic fashion fundraiser to support patients at Hunterdon Regional Cancer Center. Collaborating with the local Mount Salem Vineyards, she invited residents to a fashion show paired with a wine tasting. The event, held in October for Breast Cancer Awareness Month, featured six wines paired with six outfits, each introduced by local personalities including the town's mayor.
It was a smashing success! Over 30 women attended and through 10% of boutique sales, wine sales, and a generous matching donation, the evening raised $1,000 to help patients and families going through cancer treatment at Hunterdon Health.
The fundraiser was not only a success in terms of bringing in dollars for Hunterdon Health but also in fostering a sense of unity and purpose within the community.
"The energy in the room that night was unbelievable. Everyone was there because they love this community and wanted to support care for cancer patients. I can't wait to do it again!"
Last year, third-party fundraisers organized by community members like Maddy raised more than $55,000 for various programs at Hunterdon Health. Local groups like the 4H Pink Ladies, Girl Scout troops, sports teams, small businesses, and other volunteer organizations got creative, raising funds through fun activities like raffles, car washes, and so much more.
